Timing is everything when planning a bike trip to Tawang. Because the route involves crossing the high-altitude Sela Pass (13,700 ft), weather dictates road safety.
The Golden Windows
- Pre-Monsoon (March to May): This is the best time to visit. The snow has melted from the roads, the skies are clear, and the valleys in Dirang and Tawang are blooming with rhododendrons. The weather is crisp and pleasant.
- Post-Monsoon (September to November): Another excellent window. The monsoon rains have washed the landscapes, leaving them vibrant green. The roads are dry, and the skies offer clear views of the Himalayan peaks.
When to Avoid
- Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rainfall triggers severe landslides in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Roads get washed away, making riding incredibly dangerous.
- Peak Winter (December to February): While adventurous, Sela Pass receives heavy snowfall. Roads often ice over, making it hazardous for two-wheelers.
